BIS Certification for Polymeric Strip or Geostrip Used as Soil Reinforcement in Retaining Structures IS 17372

Introduction to Indian Standard IS 17372 : 2020;  Polymeric strip or geostrip used as soil reinforcement in retaining structures. S 17372 : 2020 cover  Polymeric strip or geostrip used as soil reinforcement in retaining structures. This standard specifies material properties and specifications that are required for geogrids to be used as reinforcement /stabilization in base, subbase and subgrade in design of flexible pavement structures. 

 

This standard is a specification aid for material purchase and shall not be used as design or construction guideline. Design of geogrid reinforced flexible pavements shall be carried out as per standard practices recommended by Indian Roads Congress using the mechanistic empirical method, or global practices including Structural Number based on the AASHTO Method. The input parameters shall include parameters relating to interaction between the geogrids and the surrounding pavement component material. It shall be noted that there are other types of geosynthetics other than geogrids, that can be used as reinforcement /stabilization for flexible pavements which cannot be excluded from being considered as alternate solutions to geogrids.

In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-sections (1) and (2) of section 16 read with section 17 and sub-section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest and after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, hereby makes the following Order, namely Geo Textiles (Quality Control) Order, 2022. As per the Geo Textiles (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Polymeric strip or geostrip used as soil reinforcement in retaining structures are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.

• In the certification process, product testing is the most important stage as it determines whether the quality of the product meets Indian standards.
• For the same purpose, investments in testing facilities are required to install test equipment for internal factory test laboratories.
