EPR Registration Process

The EPR Registration process in India involves mandatory online registration through the CPCB portal (Centralised Pollution Control Board) for producers, importers, and brand owners. Applicants have to submit their company details and other relevant documents, including GST, PAN, and IEC, along with the waste management plans. The EPR certificate is typically issued within 15 to 30 working days, once you have followed all the necessary steps.

EPR compliance applies to four key types of services, such as Plastic Waste, E-Waste, battery waste, and Non-Ferrous Metals. In this blog, we will discuss the step-by-step process for obtaining EPR Registration for all four categories, helping you to remain compliant and avoid penalties in 2026.

Process to Obtain EPR Registration for Manufacturers and Importers

As a manufacturer or importer, if you are willing to obtain EPR Registration in India, you have to go through a few specific steps, which include Self-Registration on the EPR Portal, Uploading Documentation to the Portal, Submitting the R&F EPR Action Plan, Paying Your Application Fee, CPCB/SPCB Verification/Approval, and Issuance of Confirmation of Registration. Below, you can go through the steps for all four types of EPR Registration:

Process of EPR Registration for Plastic Waste

  • You will create an account on the CPCB EPR Portal by providing information concerning your GST, PAN and the authorised signatory to create the account
  • Online EPR Registration Form Submission
  • Provide your PAN, GST, CIN, IEC (if applicable) (Please check if your IPC no. is required), your license to operate either your production facility or importing company, and details of the products or packaging
  • Provide a plan for waste collection and recycling through authorised partners
  • Pay the required registration fees (on the website)
  • CPCB or SPCB will review the applications/documents submitted
  • The EPR Registration Certificate for Plastic Waste will be sent after the registered applications/documents are approved

Process for EPR Registration for E-Waste

  • Products under Schedule I of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) must be registered.
  • Manufacturers need to register with the CPCB E-Waste Management Portal.
  • They must submit the required documentation online: PAN, GST, CIN, Import-Export Code (IEC) for importers, and details of their authorised signatory.
  • Must fill out Part A of the online application and submit an EPR plan that provides waste collection and recycling targets.
  • After documents are verified by CPCB, they will issue an EPR Registration Certificate for E-Waste if the documents pass verification.
  • Registered businesses will file annual return statements, meet their annual recycling targets, and keep their records.

Process for EPR Registration for Battery Waste

  • Go to the official EPR Portal of CPCB so that you can sign up for an account
  • Have all required documentation for registration submitted, including your GST or PAN number, an Import-Export Certificate (if you are an importer), and SPCB or PCC consent (if applicable).
  • Fill out the application form (Form 1(A) for producers) with a complete, detailed outline of your EPR plan for collecting and recycling each type of battery by setting forth specific goals.
  • CPCB will verify that all documents submitted with the application were in accordance with the requirements by conducting a compliance review.
  • Using the CPCB EPR registration portal’s payment gateway, pay the application fee ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹40,000 depending on your company’s income.
  • If everything is in order, you will receive a unique EPR registration number for Battery Waste.

Process for EPR Registration for Non-Ferrous Metals

Identify if the organisation is classified as a Producer, Importer, or Brand Owner. Gather both sales and production information with respect to metal types (i.e., Aluminum and Copper).

  • Next, register on the CPCB EPR Portal with your entity information, such as PAN Number, GST Number and/or CIN Number.
  • You will also need to provide the following documents as part of the registration process: Company PAN number and GST certificate.
  • Once your company has submitted the EPR registration form and paid the applicable registration fee, the CPCB/SPCB will review the registration application.
  • After the review process is complete and your registration has been successfully verified, an EPR registration certificate will be issued to the entity online.
  • EPR Registration certificates for Non-Ferrous Metals will be renewed periodically as required by CPCB Policy.

Validity and Renewal of EPR Registration

EPR permits for e-waste are generally valid for five years; however, other categories of waste, such as plastic and batteries, require annual EPR registrations, and some of these registrations are renewed by common financial year periods. You will need to apply for a renewal at least 60 days before your existing EPR permit expires to avoid having any operational interruptions, penalties or the suspension of your EPR permit.
