BIS Introduces Updated IS for Steel and Aluminium Products in 2026

BIS Notifies New and Revised Indian Standards

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), on 1st January, 2026, published an important Notification outlining the establishment of new and revised Indian Standards concerning various Industrial/Engineering Products. As of December 29, 2025, the New BIS Standards take precedence over previously established Old Standards. However, there is an interim period during which the use of Old Standards will continue until all Manufacturing Facilities and/or Businesses have transitioned to the New BIS Standards.
.
Let’s delve deeper and know more about the recent update and changes under BIS Certification.

Key Highlights of Updated BIS Standards 2026

Some Key Features of the Latest Bureau of Indian Standards Update:

  • There have been additions and changes to Indian Standards for certain items.
  • All existing criteria will remain in place during the interim period and remain valid for use.
  • The majority of older criteria will be terminated as of 29 June 2026.
  • Following the Cancellation Date, only the most recent versions of BIS criteria will be accepted.

Objectives of the Recent BIS Update in IS

As per the notification from BIS, the Indian Standard has been updated to improve product quality, product safety, and product consistency across all Industries/Manufacturers. To reduce any potential disruption during this transition process, the BIS is allowing manufacturers to use the old and the new standards at the same time for a specific duration. After this transitional period ends, the old standards will be discontinued, and manufacturers will be required to comply with the new BIS Standards.

What Updated IS Means for Manufacturers and Businesses

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has published revised standards for steel, aluminium, and lifting equipment, which improve the quality, safety, and reliability of these types of products in India. As the final date for transitioning to these new standards is June 29, 2026, manufacturers and businesses will need to make the necessary adjustments as soon as possible to maintain compliance with the regulations; they may risk losing access to the Indian market.

Conclusion

The BIS notification issued in January 2026 provides manufacturers and businesses with a comprehensive set of updated Indian Standards to use when creating and selling their products in India. Manufacturers and businesses should begin making changes to their production processes as soon as possible so that they comply with the new standards before losing access to the Indian market starting June 29, 2026.
